This retrospective audit of 80 Australian accredited exercise physiology clinicians before and during the COVID-19 pandemic assessed relevant dimensions of Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, and Implementation (RE-AIM framework). During the COVID-19 pandemic, most accredited exercise physiology clinicians increased telehealth delivery services and decreased in-person client service provision. Most clinicians implemented synchronous telehealth delivery with a range of clients and across various referral pathways (adoption). Client reasons for not accepting telehealth delivery included physical/cognitive incapacity, safety concerns and access to reliable platforms (reach).

Fitness assessments offered by our exercise physiology lab include body composition tests, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, flexibility and endurance testing. We also provide a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) assessment, which measures how many calories your body burns at rest to maintain its vital functions. This information will give you insight into your total metabolic rate and how many calories you can safely consume to achieve your goals.

Prescription of Exercise Programs

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) prescribe exercise to prevent and treat chronic disease, reduce injury risk, and improve overall well-being. The AEPs use therapeutic training, education and manual techniques to increase strength, endurance, balance and flexibility and decrease pain in patients with musculoskeletal injuries or conditions. They also work closely with other health professionals, such as doctors, physiotherapists and chiropractors, to coordinate treatment in rehabilitation settings.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth delivery of exercise physiology services increased and in-person services decreased among Australian accredited exercise physiology clinicians (reach). Clinicians implemented synchronous telehealth delivery (adoption) for client demographics with varying referral pathways. Most clinicians regarded telehealth delivery as effective for delivering their services (efficacy). However, some clinicians reported concerns regarding the client’s physical/cognitive incapacity and safety. In contrast, clients commonly cited personal preference and access to reliable platforms as barriers to accepting telehealth exercise physiology services.

Most clients provided telehealth exercise physiology services by participating clinicians were NDIS participants. NDIS participants represent a significant proportion of the Australian community and are a potential target market for various healthcare services, including exercise physiology. In addition, almost half of the clinicians surveyed offered NDIS-funded exercise physiology services, an essential source of revenue for many allied health clinicians in Australia. It is, therefore, vital to consider the needs of NDIS participants when delivering telehealth-based exercise physiology services.

Treatment of Injuries

Exercise Physiology is an allied health profession that uses therapeutic exercise, education and manual techniques to help clients increase their strength, reduce pain and improve their quality of life. It can also manage and prevent chronic conditions like diabetes and pulmonary (lung) diseases. It can also be helpful for people who are injured or recovering from surgery or illness.

The clinical component of exercise physiology is where a clinically trained Exercise Physiologist specialises in managing and treating musculoskeletal injuries and chronic illnesses. This includes rehabilitating acute and subacute injuries, improving postural control, helping people return to work after injury, managing respiratory diseases through an integrated approach, and providing general well-being advice.

This is the most demanding aspect of exercise physiology practice and sets it apart from other fitness professionals. It requires extensive knowledge and training in assessing and prescribing therapeutic exercise, medical procedures, advanced first aid and emergency management. It also involves a great deal of contact with patients to educate them and to motivate them to take responsibility for their health through regular exercise.
